Straumann Group has entered a major strategic partnership with Shanghai-based Smartee Dental Technology. This alliance aims to co-develop a high-performance, next-generation orthodontic platform by integrating Smartee’s technological innovations into the ClearCorrect clear aligner brand. The collaboration provides ClearCorrect with advanced solutions for complex cases without risking patent infringement.
Breakthroughs for Complex Cases
The partnership introduces specialized protocols for treating severe tooth protrusions and jaw disharmonies. ClearCorrect now features Mandibular Relocation Technology, which serves as their proprietary version of mandibular advancement. The design functions similarly to a twin block mechanism built directly onto a clear aligner. Additionally, the platform is rolling out circadian rhythm aligners, which utilize a dual day-and-night system consisting of softer material for daytime wear and firmer material for sleep.
Global Manufacturing Shifting
Smartee relies on a highly automated production line that drastically lowers manufacturing costs and increases profit margins. In response to this efficiency, Straumann is closing its traditional ClearCorrect manufacturing facility located in Germany. Production footprint is shifting to Smartee’s automated facilities to handle manufacturing for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Pacific. As part of this strategic deal, Straumann Group purchased a single-digit percentage equity stake in the Chinese dental tech company.
Moving Past Historical Legal Hurdles
During the 2010s, Align Technology filed a massive patent infringement lawsuit against ClearCorrect, forcing the company to pull back features and restructure its treatment workflows. To avoid further predatory litigation, ClearCorrect historically refrained from launching advanced features that resembled Invisalign’s SmartForce attachments or mandibular advancement wings. This caution restricted ClearCorrect to simpler clinical cases, which sometimes led to poor outcomes when applied to complex setups. Combined with Straumann’s extensive financial backing, Smartee’s research and development infrastructure allows ClearCorrect to innovate aggressively and compete directly with Invisalign.
