These components serve as functional mechanical tools designed to solve specific bite issues and handle complex tooth movements.
The Function of Bite Ramps and Bite Turbos
Bite ramps are specialized structures built directly into the plastic of the clear aligners, usually resting on the back of the front teeth. Orthodontists frequently utilize these features for patients struggling with a deep bite to help open up the vertical overlap of the arches. By altering how the upper and lower teeth meet, bite ramps effectively level the curve of Spee, which is the natural anatomical curve of the dental arch.
These structures are also highly beneficial for individuals who suffer from severe bruxism, clenching, or grinding. Continuous nighttime clenching on flat plastic can accidentally intrude the back teeth and cause an unwanted posterior open bite. Bite ramps deliberately prevent the back teeth from touching when biting down, which takes massive mechanical pressure off the temporomandibular joints. While patients might find it strange that their molars do not meet with the trays in, this separation is intentional and therapeutically protective.
Understanding Optimized Attachments and Retention Bumps
Attachments are small, tooth-colored composite bumps that a dentist bonds to the surface of the teeth to give the plastic tray something to grip.
